Today was the Walk Now for Autism in southwest Missouri. Robbie didn't get to go because he got sick on the way there so he went to Grandmas instead. I saw his Teacher he had in early childhood special education. He was in her class for 2 years. I was sad that he missed the event and missed seeing his former Teacher.
Drinks and Foods were provided by local venders. A boy with Autism approached me. I said hi and he raised his juicebox towards me. I said "oh are you all done" and took the empty box from him. His sister looked at me in suprise and said oh I'll take his trash. I told her it was okay.
I'm not only a Mom, but I also have a son with Autism so what happened didn't shock me and I didn't think much of it. The sister looked at me suprised, and had that look like "is she gonna get mad?" in her eyes. Even though we were at an event for Autism she still expected the usual reaction she would get from someone who didn't understand. It made me glad that I had the opportunity to give a positive reaction when so many are use to getting dirty looks or treated badly because they are different.
